Clay Stalter discovered the rewards of teaching while a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Missouri, Columbia. As the teaching assistant for Advanced Techniques in Photojournalism, Stalter taught the laboratory sections of the course where he instructed the hands-on portion of studio and location lighting. He also assisted Professor Rita Reed in the lectures and graded half of the students' assignments.

Since 2012 Statler has been teaching Digital Photography as an adjunct instructor at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL. It is a beginning course through the school's art department and teaches students with no familiarity of a digital single lens reflex camera or editing software the basics of exposure and composition. He emphasizes the importance of software proficiency for editing and presenting their work. The course progresses from nuts and bolts technical knowledge to incorporating content and message to their work. His focus is to teach students to use their cameras with intention.

Stalter began teaching a similar beginning photography class at the University of Illinois, Springfield in 2014. Below are samples of student work from these classes.
