Missouri's Civil War

This website was created to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War and give visitors insight into Missouri's involvement during that first year of the war. The site focuses on the issues leading up to the Civil War, major battles within Missouri during the first year of the war, profiles of the living historians who interpret those events, and the material legacy that survives to the present day.

As executive producer, Clay Stalter collaborated with University of Missouri faculty to integrate projects into their classes and developed lesson plans to train the students in both coverage and editing. He also recruited and trained teams of student volunteer photojournalists to provide coverage outside of their coursework. Additionally, Stalter created content for the site and edited many of the students' pieces. The site is active and can be found at www.missouriscivilwar.com or by clicking on the image below.

My Life, My Town

The My Life, My Town website focused on areas outside the reach of established media outlets. The goal was to gain insight into the issues of each town and the future of those communities by documenting a slice of life of the town's youth. The project was a collaboration between the photo editors and photographers of The Missourian and KBIA, the Columbia, Missouri NPR affiliate.

As a series producer for the inaugural effort, Stalter worked with KBIA editors to launch the project, produce stories,  pair photographers with audio reporters, shape coverage, and edited the projects. The site launched with four projects in 2011 and continued until 2013, under different visual leadership, publishing about four projects per semester. The archived website can be found by clicking on the image below. Stories completed under Stalter's supervision are embedded below.

Photo Editing for Print

As photo editor at the Jacksonville Journal-Courier (Jacksonville, IL) Stalter worked closely with page designers and other editors advocating for optimal visual presentation of the day's news. He was responsible for the photographic presentation in print and on the newspaper's website, both on a daily basis and for special publications. He also managed the department's day-to-day operations.
